A Safe Haven for Women Escaping Violence
Elsie House, operated by Yumba-Meta Limited, is a dedicated shelter providing vital support for women and their children escaping domestic and family violence. With six bedrooms, the shelter offers a safe and comforting space where women can begin to heal and rebuild their lives. Elsie House is named after Mrs. Elsie May Thompson, one of Yumba-Meta’s founding members and a long-term volunteer.
Elsie House not only provides emergency accommodation but also offers comprehensive support to help women take control of their future. The shelter fosters a sense of community among residents, helping them support one another in their journey toward recovery.
Key Services at Elsie House:
- Round-the-clock support to ensure safety and stability
- Crisis counselling for immediate emotional and psychological needs
- Safety planning to protect residents from harm
- Legal advocacy to help women navigate legal challenges
- Skills training to promote independence and long-term recovery
Support for Children
Children at Elsie House are offered counselling and tailored support to help them understand and cope with their experiences. This is essential in reducing the long-term impact of trauma and breaking the cycle of violence.
Yumba-Meta’s commitment to Elsie House reflects our belief that every woman deserves a life free from fear and violence. Through our shelter, we help women and children move toward safer, brighter futures.
The Queensland State Government and the Federal Government provide funding to YML to operate the shelters with 24/7 staffing 365 days of the year.
